The Republic of Qoraqalpoghiston

The Republic of Qoraqalpoghiston is situated in the North-West of Uzbekistan. It borders in the North, North-East and the West with Kazakhstan, in the South and the South-East - with Turkmenistan, in the East and the South-East - with Navoi and Khorazm provinces. Plato Ustyurt, Qyzylqum desert and Aral Sea occupy the major part of its territory.

The area of the province comprises 166.6 thousand square km. As of 1 January, 2006, the population was 15726.8 thousand people with 56% living in rural areas and 44% - in urban areas.

The modern territory of Qoraqalpoghiston is located in the territory of Khorazm, the ancient state of Central Asia. The province has rich history and culture, amazing monuments.

The capital of Qoraqalpoghiston is Nukus, modern cultural and industrial city with well developed network of cultural and health centers, modern transport hubs.

Convenient geographical location allows to trade actively with Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. The development of central provinces of Kazakhstan is contributing to expansion of sales market for exporters of Qoraqalpoghiston. Total length of motor ways in the province is 4.1 thousand km and railways 844.3 km. Railroad route Chardjou-Kungrad-Beneu-Makat passes through Qoraqalpoghiston being the main route from Central Asia to Russia and other European countries.

Large production reserves of the province are hidden in building materials industry (production of cement, haydite, gypsum, facing stone), mining (exploration of deposits of titan-magnesium ores), chemical industry (processing of sulphate salts, phosphorites and others), gold mining as well as oil and gas industry (processing gas condensate). Production and processing of liquorices, sweet root, rice and cable products are among competitive advantages of the province.

In January 2007, Program of development of production, expansion of export potential and creation of new jobs through attraction of investments to the Republic of Qoraqalpoghiston till 2009 was issued. The program envisages implementation of 39 projects totaling to US $ 40.3 million and 74.3 billion Soums in the area of textile, meat, dairy and furniture industries, processing of fruit and vegetable products, production of building materials and providing tourism services.
