Samarqand province is situated in the centre of Uzbekistan, in the Zaravshan river basin. The total area of the province is 16.4 thousand sq km. The climate is typically continental and droughty. The number of permanent population is 2907 thousand people with three fourths living in rural area. The province is divided into 16 administrative provinces. Kattaqurghon, Nurota, Urgut, Juma and Oqtosh are the cities. The administrative centre is Samarqand.
Samarqand is one of the most ancient cities of the world, the coeval of Rome, Athens, Babylon. In 2007, it celebrates the 2750 jubilee.
The Samarqand province has large reserves of the mineral resources used for production of building materials such as marble, granite, limestone, deposits of chalk and lime, crude cement, keramzite and raw material for brick.
Priority industries are the chemical, flour-grinding, food, porcelain
industries, metal working and mechanical engineering.
Basis of the industry of province are such enterprises, as JSC «Samarqand elevator building plant», JSC «Samarqand chemical plant», JSC "Alpomish" on production of automobile and tractor spare parts, JSC "Sino" production of modern refrigerators and air conditioners, Samarqand tea packing factory, JSC “SAmAuto" on production of trucks and buses together with company "ISUZU", JSC "Nafis" on production of china and faience utensils, JSC «Khovrenko» on production of wine, JSC «Kattaqurghon yog-moi» on production of vegetable oil and the JV "UzBAT" together with the company «British American Tobacco» on production of tobacco products.
Specialization in agriculture includes cultivation of a cotton and wheat, winemaking and silk growing. The province has large opportunities for the highly profitable tinned production with use of local agricultural products. The province is rich with a variety of fruits, vegetables, melon, water-melon and gourds.
The infrastructure of communications is presented by the developed network of railway, automobile, air transport, highway and a modern communications facility. The total length of highways of the province is 4.1 thousand km, railways - 400 km. The modern communications facility is presented by a wide network of wire, radio-relay, cellular, a satellite communications and the Internet.
