Qashqadaryo province

Qashqadaryo province is located in the South of the country in the basin of the river Qashqadaryo on the Western slope of Pamir-Alai mountains. The area of the province – is 28.6 thousand square km or 6.3 % of the total territory of the country. Number of permanent population, as of 1 January, 2006, is 2419.8 thousand people of which the share of capacitated population makes 50.9 %. The province has 13 administrative districts, 1 city of republican subordination, 4 villages of town type.

The climate is sharply continental, in the South - subtropical, dry. Winter is warm, summer is hot, dry and long.

The economy of the Qashqadaryo province has an agrarian and industrial orientation. In the province, the main part of hydrocarbon reserves of Uzbekistan is concentrated. On oil & gas extraction, refining and processing, the province takes leading place in the country.

Basis of the industry are such enterprises of oil and gas sector as the Joint Stock Company Shurtanneftegas, the Joint Stock Company Muborak gas refinery, gas compressor station Kukdumalakgaz, Muborakneftegas. Along with this, there are large enterprises of light and processing industries: the JV Cotton Road, the JV Qarshi Yog Extraciya (oil extraction), the JV Oqsaroy tuqimiachi, Shahrisabz cannery.

Deposits of ore and nonmetallic minerals suitable for production, including in ferrous metallurgy, in production of fire-resistant raw material, a porcelain stone, ceramic raw material, mining-chemical raw material as well as deposit of stone and potash salt, agro-ore – bentonite clay and glauconite, facing and wall stones. There are perspective ore manifestations of gold, tungsten, copper, lead and zinc, aluminum, antimonies, mercury, coal, combustible slates and sulfur.

The main agricultural sectors of the province are cotton growing, silk growing, grain growing and gardening. The fruit and vegetable production sector occupies a significant share in agriculture of the province.

The total length of railways in the province is 350 km, the total length of roads - 30 thousand km. The total length of the asphalted lines is 4 thousand km. The province has regular flights to Tashkent and other large cities of Uzbekistan. Shahrisabz, which is the birthplace of Amir Temur is the main tourist sight in the Qashqadaryo province.
